TED LINDSAY THE ULTIMATE TEAMMATE

TED LINDSAY – THE ULTIMATE TEAMMMATE

The NHL and the hockey world suffered a great loss with the passing of Hockey Hall of Fame member, Ted Lindsay. The media is filled with tributes to Ted, from his outstanding playing career to his pioneering efforts in founding the NHL Players Association, to his many philanthropist endeavors.

I had the chance to know the “Man” while working with the Red Wings and through many Detroit Red Wings Alumni charity events. He inspired others with his integrity, his humility and his outstanding competitive spirit.

Ted Lindsay had the heart of a true Champion and he was a pure Red Wing.

The opportunity to spend time with Ted was always special for me. I recall several memorable moments, but the one that stands out over all others happened just a short time ago. We both attended an event with the NHL Alumni Association in Toronto. Most of the day was spent with Alumni meetings followed by a fund-raising event in the evening. The meetings took place at our airport hotel and the event was held downtown.

Following a full day of meetings, we took a bus which would bring us to the venue downtown. During the evening, a member of the Association offered to drive Ted back to the hotel. It had been a long day for all of us, especially for a man into his 90’s.

As the reception concluded, tired and anxious to return to our hotel, my wife, Nicole, and I were first to return to the bus. To our surprise, Ted and his wife, Joanne, were sitting in the front seat of the bus. When I saw them, I asked Ted: “What are you doing here? I thought that you were driven back to the hotel!” Ted looked at me straight in the eyes and simply replied: “I CAME WITH THE TEAM, I LEAVE WITH THE TEAM!”

His response was a tribute to his character and his dedication to his team. Ted Lindsay was a True Leader and the Ultimate Teammate.

What a role model, not only for all hockey players and for all people!

Rest in Peace Ted! You will be missed but never forgotten! Thank You!
